Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
A full Schluter kitchen remodel in Fort Worth typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, and we stock Schluter profiles, membranes, and waterproofing components on the truck for most service calls. You’ll usually know something’s wrong when you spot cracked grout, loose tile at the floor line, or water staining below the sink base. Most Fort Worth homeowners discover the failure the hard way: a soft spot in the subfloor, a tile that pops loose with a hollow sound, or a dishwasher leak that wicked up into drywall because the Schluter transition wasn’t sealed correctly. That’s the call we get most often.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor in Fort Worth, not a Schluter distributor. That matters because we’re not pushing a catalog. We’re pulling your cabinets, inspecting the substrate, and telling you whether the problem is the Schluter component, the install, or the tile assembly above it. Often it’s all three.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

The parts we replace most often come from three Schluter systems: the KERDI waterproofing membrane line, the DITRA uncoupling mat line, and the Schluter edge profiles (the metal strips that finish tile edges and floor transitions). If your kitchen was built or remodeled in the last 15 years with a tile floor, a tile backsplash, or a tiled shower adjacent to the kitchen, there’s a good chance Schluter components are in the assembly.
The compatibility gotcha most Fort Worth homeowners run into is this: DITRA and DITRA-XL are not interchangeable. DITRA-XL is thicker (5/16 inch versus 1/8 inch) and exists specifically to match tile height to 3/4-inch hardwood. If you’re pulling up a section of failed kitchen floor and the original installer used DITRA-XL to flush up to an oak threshold, a contractor who swaps in standard DITRA leaves you with a 3/16-inch lip. We see this in older homes near the Cultural District where original hardwood butts against 2000s-era tile. Matching the mat thickness matters, and we measure before we quote.
For edge profiles, Schluter products come in specific finishes (brushed nickel, chrome, matte black, and anodized aluminum) and profile heights matched to tile thickness. The profile height must match the tile, not the other way around. If you bring us a profile you bought online that’s 1/16 inch too short, the tile will crack at the edge within a year. We stock common heights on the truck: 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch.
OEM versus aftermarket: for Schluter membranes and drainage components, we use genuine OEM parts. The fleece backing on KERDI is what allows thin-set to bond to it, and knockoff membranes don’t have the same fleece density or thickness tolerance. For edge profiles, quality aftermarket aluminum equivalents exist and can save money, but we’ll tell you if the finish you want isn’t available aftermarket. Never a mystery part, never a “generic equivalent” without telling you first.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Hollow-sounding tile near the sink or dishwasher. This means the thin-set bond between the tile and the DITRA or KERDI layer has failed, usually from repeated water exposure or a bad original install. The tile is floating. It will crack.
- Cracked grout lines running in a straight path. A straight-line crack means movement underneath. The Schluter uncoupling mat is designed to absorb substrate movement, but if the movement joint was skipped or the mat wasn’t fully embedded, the crack telegraphs straight through.
- Water staining on the cabinet toe kick or baseboard. This is the most common sign a KERDI waterproofing seam failed. The fleece overlap was too small, the thin-set skinned over before the membrane went down, or a corner wasn’t pre-formed. Water travels down and out, and by the time you see it, the cabinet and subfloor have been wet for weeks.
- Loose or lifting edge profile at the floor transition. The Schluter profile was installed with the wrong thin-set (premixed mastic instead of modified thin-set) or the anchoring leg wasn’t fully pressed into the mortar bed. Once the profile lifts, it becomes a toe-stubber and a water entry point.
- Dark staining or swelling under the tile backer at the counter edge. This is a substrate failure. The Schluter layer is only as good as what’s under it. If Fort Worth humidity plus a slow plumbing drip got into OSB subfloor, water wicks up through the seams and the whole assembly starts to move.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest pricing picture for Fort Worth, because homeowners shouldn’t have to call just to know if a project is in their ballpark.
| Scope | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Targeted Schluter membrane or profile repair (small section, one seam) | $800 – $2,500 |
| Backsplash removal, Schluter re-waterproof, and retile | $800 – $2,500 |
| Full kitchen floor DITRA replacement with new tile | $9,000 – $20,000 |
| Full Schluter kitchen remodel (cabinets, counters, Schluter systems, tile) | $14,000 – $45,000 |
The wide spread comes down to square footage, tile selection, whether cabinets come out, and what the substrate inspection reveals. A 90-square-foot galley kitchen floor in a Mistletoe Heights bungalow is a different job than a 300-square-foot open-plan kitchen in a new build near Walsh Ranch. Every quote includes a written line-item breakdown: parts, labor, disposal, and materials from our named suppliers (KraftMaid, Cambria, Silestone among them). The number we write down before we start is the number on the invoice at the end. If we open the floor and find subfloor rot that wasn’t visible, we photo-document it, show you, and get your written approval on the change before we proceed. No surprise line items.
Every Schluter repair and remodel carries our full written warranty, plus the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right, we make it right for a full year, in writing, on every job. If a covered repair fails, we come back. No argument, no runaround.
DIy or Call Us?
There are things you can check safely. You can look for cracked grout, test for hollow tile with the handle of a screwdriver (tap and listen for the dull sound), and check under the sink cabinet with a flashlight for water staining. What you should not do is start pulling tile to “see what’s underneath.” By the time you get to the DITRA or KERDI layer, you’re mid-demolition, and if that membrane is still bonded in places, you’ll tear the fleece backing and turn a repair into a floor replacement. If the tile is loose over a KERDI seam, it’s an in-and-out fix that costs hundreds, not thousands. If you dig in with a pry bar first, it’s a different job.
If you’re seeing any of the signs above, call us. We’ll send a uniformed, background-checked technician with a live arrival time, do a full inspection, and put the price in writing before a tool comes out. That’s The Relay Visibility Guarantee on every single job. Call (682) 841-6652 to schedule yours. Free estimates, written quotes, no pressure. Luca still walks the job himself, because The work talks. We just back it up.
FAQs

A correctly installed Schluter KERDI or DITRA system should last the life of the tile assembly, which in a Fort Worth kitchen is realistically 20 to 30 years if the substrate stays dry and the movement joints are respected. What kills Schluter systems early is moisture intrusion from plumbing failures and install errors at seams, not product breakdown. If your tile assembly failed at year six or seven, the membrane itself is rarely the root cause. We find a seam gap, a skipped corner, or water coming from somewhere else. Call (682) 841-6652 for an inspection and we’ll tell you what actually failed.
A single failed seam can often be repaired without replacing the whole floor, if we catch it before water damage spreads to the subfloor. We isolate the failed section, cut back to solid membrane, overlap a fresh KERDI patch with the required 2-inch minimum seam, and retile just that area. If water has been running into the assembly for months, the whole floor typically comes out. The price difference is substantial, which is why we tell Fort Worth homeowners to call at first sign of cracking or staining. A $1,200 repair is better than a $14,000 floor. Call (682) 841-6652 for an exact quote.
Most targeted Schluter repairs, including a single seam patch with retile, take one to two days on site, plus curing time before grout. A full kitchen floor DITRA replacement with new tile typically runs three to five working days depending on square footage and whether cabinets need to come out. We schedule a window and hit it because your kitchen being down is a real disruption, not a background inconvenience. Call (682) 841-6652 and we’ll give you a specific timeline for your scope.
Our Fort Worth service trucks carry the most common Schluter pieces: DITRA and DITRA-XL mat rolls, KERDI membrane and band, pre-formed inside and outside corners, pipe collars, and common Schluter edge profile heights in standard finishes. If your repair needs an unusual profile height or a specific finish we don’t have on hand, we source it from our local supplier, usually same-week. We’ll tell you upfront if the part is a stock item or an order item before you approve the quote. Call (682) 841-6652 to schedule a free inspection and know exactly what you’re looking at.
