Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
If you’re staring at a Therma-Tru product that’s failing in your kitchen, here’s the short version: we install Therma-Tru-compatible kitchen components in Fort Worth every week, and a full kitchen remodel runs $14,000 to $45,000 depending on scope. Part-specific swaps (a single door, hinge set, or threshold repair) land on the lower end of that range, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts. Most homeowners discover the failure the same way: a door that drags, a threshold that’s rotted through at the corners, or hinges that scream every time the fridge door swings open. You notice it at breakfast. It annoys you by dinner.
We’re an independent Fort Worth contractor. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, and we’ll tell you that straight. What we are is a crew that’s spent years working on homes across Fort Worth, and we know how Therma-Tru products behave in Texas heat and humidity better than most.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru makes a range of entry and interior door systems, and when they appear in kitchens, it’s usually one of a few places. The Smooth-Star series (fiberglass, common on side entries and mudroom-to-kitchen transitions), the Classic-Craft line (higher-end fiberglass with deeper grain patterns), and the Benchmark line (builder-grade, found in newer Fort Worth construction). Each uses slightly different hinge geometry and weatherstripping channels, so matching the part to the exact door label matters.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Therma-Tru hinges are not universal. Some models use 4-1/2 inch hinges with a specific barrel offset. Others use 3-1/2 inch. If you grab a generic hinge off a shelf, the door will sit proud of the jamb by an eighth of an inch and you’ll feel it every time you close it. We match hinge size, door weight rating, and reveal gap on every job. For OEM parts, the door has a label on the hinge edge with a model number and manufacture date. If the label is gone (common on older doors), we measure the slab thickness, the bore spacing, and the hinge radius to nail the right replacement. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for hinges and sweeps, quality aftermarket parts from manufacturers like Benchmark and Barton work well and cost 30 to 60 percent less. For slabs, skins, and composite rails, we push OEM Therma-Tru because the material chemistry actually affects how the door holds its shape in Fort Worth’s summer humidity.
We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the cabinetry and counters that sit next to those doors, but when the problem is a Therma-Tru component, we keep the part recommendation specific to the door.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Door drags at the latch corner. This is usually hinge wear, not a sagging slab. The top hinge takes the most torque, and after 7 to 10 years in a Fort Worth kitchen, the knuckle wears enough that the door drops an eighth of an inch. You’ll see the drag first as paint wearing off the frame at the latch side.
- Sweep or weatherstrip is cracked or peeling. Therma-Tru door sweeps are a vinyl-rubber composite, and Texas sun hardens them on west-facing entries. When the sweep fails, you get a visible light gap under the door and the kitchen loses cooled air in summer. It’s a $30 to $60 part on most models, and the single most common fix we do on Therma-Tru doors in Fort Worth.
- Threshold has soft spots or hairline cracks. Most Therma-Tru thresholds are extruded aluminum over a wood core. In older Fort Worth homes where the threshold was installed directly on concrete with no sill pan, moisture wicks up and rots the core from underneath. You’ll see hairline cracks at the screw holes first. It fails from the bottom up.
- Hinges creak even after oiling. Squeaking that doesn’t quit points to worn hinge pins or screws that have lost their bite in the jamb. Once the screw hole is wallowed out, oil won’t help. The fix is longer screws or a hinge replacement, and we do it in under an hour on most doors.
- Door slab has hairline horizontal lines you can see in raking light. This is the early sign of skin delamination on Smooth-Star slabs. It starts as a hairline crack at the edges, usually on doors that face east or west in Fort Worth and take the full blast of afternoon sun. Early detection means we can usually save the slab. Ignored, it spreads and the skin separates from the core.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Fort Worth pricing has to be real, so here it is in writing.
| Scope of Work | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full kitchen remodel including Therma-Tru entry/combo door replacement | $14,000 – $45,000 |
| Small kitchen remodel with door/component refresh | $9,000 – $20,000 |
| Therma-Tru door sweep replacement | $30 – $60 (part) + labor |
| Hinge set replacement (labor included) | $150 – $400 |
| Threshold replacement, aluminum-composite | $350 – $900 installed |
| Slab replacement on existing jamb (OEM Therma-Tru) | $1,200 – $3,500 |
What drives the range: door size, whether the jamb is reusable, the series you have (Benchmark parts are cheaper than Classic-Craft), and whether the kitchen work ties into cabinetry, counters, or flooring. Every quote is line-item priced so you see the part cost and the labor separately. We carry the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part we install fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No invoice surprises, no “we found more damage once we opened the wall” phone calls. The price you sign is the price you pay.
For the full-kitchen end of the range, the work typically includes the Therma-Tru component replacement alongside cabinet and counter work. We’ll tell you up front what’s included and what isn’t, and the price holds.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely replace a door sweep or weatherstrip on most Therma-Tru models using a Phillips head driver and 20 minutes. If the problem is hinges and you’re comfortable with a drill and a level, hinge replacement is doable but try not to strip the jamb screws. What goes wrong for homeowners is usually the threshold or the slab. Both require removing the door, which is heavier than most people expect. A Therma-Tru fiberglass slab with glass can weigh 80 to 120 pounds, and if it gets away from you, it damages the tile, the door, or a foot. Threshold replacement also involves getting the slope right so water sheds away from the kitchen floor. If you get it wrong, you’ll find water under the flooring in a year and your “cheap fix” becomes a floor replacement.
Dangerous parts of this work? The door itself. It’s heavy. We arrive with two people and proper shimming tools. Save yourself the hospital visit and call (682) 841-6652 for a free estimate. We’ll tell you what’s actually wrong, and if it’s a sweep you can do yourself, we’ll tell you that too. Honesty over invoice padding.
FAQs

How long does a Therma-Tru kitchen entry door last in Fort Worth?
Expect 20 to 30 years for the slab, but the components around it (sweeps, hinge pins, thresholds) fail far earlier in North Texas heat and humidity, typically at the 7 to 15 year mark depending on orientation and sun exposure. The good news is those parts are replaceable. A failed sweep isn’t a failed door. Call (682) 841-6652 for a quick assessment.
Can a failing Therma-Tru door be repaired instead of replaced?
Most of the time, yes. Hinges, sweeps, thresholds, and weatherstripping are repair jobs. Slab delamination early on is usually repairable with the right adhesive and refinish. Full slab replacement is the call when the skin separation is widespread, the core is cracked, or the door has been trimmed incorrectly by a previous contractor. We will tell you which one you need, not whichever one pays more.
How long does a Therma-Tru component swap take?
A hinge set or sweep replacement is under an hour. A threshold replacement runs 2 to 3 hours. Full slab replacement with jamb adjustment is a half-day to full-day job depending on door size and whether we’re keeping your existing hardware. You’ll get a live arrival time and photo updates through The Relay Visibility Guarantee, so you’re never guessing where we are. Call (682) 841-6652 for a timeline on your specific door.
Do you stock Therma-Tru parts in Fort Worth?
Our trucks carry the most common OEM and aftermarket sweeps, hinge sets, and weatherstripping for Therma-Tru Smooth-Star and Benchmark models. For Classic-Craft slabs or custom sizes, we order OEM parts and typically have them in hand within a week. If we have what you need, we can often complete the repair the same day we arrive. Call (682) 841-6652 and describe what you’re seeing; we’ll tell you what we can do.
